Types of Restrictive Lung Diseases
Restrictive lung diseases are a category of extrapulmonary, pleural, or parenchymal respiratory diseases that restrict lung expansion, resulting in a decreased lung volume, increased workload of breathing, and inadequate ventilation or oxygenation.
In this video, Dr. Mobeen Syed discusses the types of restrictive lung diseases.
There are three primary types of restrictive lung diseases, which are extrapulmonary, pulmonary parenchymal, and neuromuscular.
Extrapulmonary-restrictive lung diseases include obesity, scoliosis (angulation of spinal cord).
Neuromuscular-restrictive lung diseases include myasthenia gravis, diaphragmatic failure, and polio.
The category of parenchymal-restrictive diseases includes idiopathic, autoimmune, granulomatous, occupational diseases (silicosis, anthracosis, asbestosis), chronic infections, tuberculosis.
